This members club dining room, open to the public for lunch, used to look like a centre spread from Arab Millionaire. Now home to the cooking of The Naked Chef, Jamie Oliver, and his designated chef Ben O’Donoghue, the new dining room is an exercise in cool restraint, with chocolate leather window surrounds, comfy smart club chairs, stimulating neutrals and generous space between tables. No amount of pre-determined desire to dislike the enfant terrible’s cooking could withstand a genuinely enjoyable fritto misto of courgette blossoms, caper bunches, anchovies and spinach. Homemade pasta was also endearing, pace cappollacci filled with buffalo ricotta. As were some really wonderful scallops with surface caramelisation enhancing their sweetness, served with a seasonally inspired mix of broad beans, peas and samphire well-flavoured with plenty of lemon and good olive oil. The famously non-attired chef is obviously not all mouth.
