Dragon Castle
A stone’s throw from the dreary Elephant & Castle shopping centre and perched between soulless council estates and ugly office blocks, this Chinese belies its location and surprisingly, offers elevated and highly elevated Cantonese cooking. Vast interior has a simplicity about it and on evidence of its clientele – from office workers to families and pensioners, seems to welcome one and all with open arms. What’s more is that the price levels are extremely attractive. Starters are spilt between hot and cold appetizers. From the former, the crispy tofu with chilli garlic and peppercorn salt is a subtle and wonderfully light dish. Ditto the dish of seasoned jellyfish with cucumber from the latter selection, which is very similar to a salad. Mains are rich and unfussy, exemplified by the braised lamb shank with shallots and yoghurt – not an ingredient used very often in Chinese cooking – and the duck braised with yam. Sides are freshly flavoured and faultless. How can a restaurant in an area such as this be so good?
