Mangetu
Bromley isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of a glitzy, modern-looking restaurant, particularly when it comes to being perched in the midst of pizza and kebab-style outlets. But clearly this new establishment, that offers a mish-mash of south-east Asian food, is trying to cash in on a young client base. Whether it works to good effect remains to be seen, but certainly on evidence of the cooking, the place isn’t off to a memorable start – at least in a positive sense. Vegetarian wontons came covered in oodles of grease and the battered crab cakes were more in line with chicken nuggets you might get at a second-rate local takeaway. Mains don’t fare much better either and display further evidence that the chef doesn’t quite know the meaning of “contemporary” or “presentation”. Still, amongst the misfires were a reasonably flavoured salt and pepper squid and some fine soba noodles. But that isn’t saying much. The décor of red-hued wallpaper and black wood partitioned booths is a plus though.
