If you want a holiday in Thailand but only have a night to do it, have dinner here, at London’s swankest Thai restaurant. Not content to rest on its laurels, a recent expansion has resulted in a gold-leafed bar in the shape of a royal Thai long boat (made by the King’s boat-carvers), set down in a large lounge with its own entrance. Yet another fish pond has been added, increasing the Thai village-effect, with wonderful teak underfoot. There’s also an entirely new kitchen to keep the chefs happy, and they do produce. Tissue-thin pancakes are steamed on muslin, bean curd is turned into beggar’s purses, as well as more familiar but high-end stays, paper prawns and spicy salads. Spicy whole steamed fish, ginger lobster, curry and stir fry dishes showing the full, exciting range of Thai cooking; beef salads and roasted duck curry are especially good. There is also a full vegetarian menu. Wines are specially bought for the group and well match the refined cooking.
