Having long settled into a groove at Spitalfields, the site at the Southbank Centre seems a perfect fit, what with the riverside, an area which has fast become one of the prime destination dining points in London and cooking which plays up the well-sourced British theme, but at reasonable prices. Glamorgan vegetarian sausages with pear chutney are a worthy starter, as is the onion and sage tart. The mains offer a hearty and an almost pub-like choice of dishes, but rest assured it’s well-executed as exemplified by the smoked haddock with spinach and mash. Everything is made fresh and the daily-changing pies are no different, accompanied by mash, greens and gravy. There are enough cakes and pastries here to keep the sweet toothed quite content, with one of the best puddings being the orange jelly with ice cream and shortbread. Wonderful.
