Jamie’s Italian
Jamie’s Italian – seasonal menu and exclusive dishes revealed
The Box
Newly opened in Soho at 11-12 Walker’s Court W1F 0ED, The Box is very different from most dining venues.
Being an ex-pat American, there are times I get cravings for some foods that are identified with the U.S. Good pizza by the slice, proper fried chicken, good ribs and a non-fast-food burger. For years, the Hard Rock Café was pointed out as having the best burgers in London and, while they are very good, queuing up with the tourists to sit inside decibel hell is not so much my idea of a good time as it is a pre-taste of purgatory.
When I heard the name Gourmet Burger Kitchen, it sounded like it could either be hubris or heaven. So it is with genuine satisfaction that I can say this really is a restaurant that (to coin a phrase) delivers just what it says it will. These are big burgers and they’re piled high, so don’t go if you’re just recovering from lockjaw. These are juicy burgers that dribble down your wrist and forearms, so don’t go in dry-clean-only clothing or on a first date. These are delicious burgers, lusty burgers, soul-satisfying burgers so do go if you’re hungry and want something honest. And do go if you’re vegetarian because these are non-exclusive burgers so there are options like falafel or portabella mushroom burgers. And do go if you don’t eat red meat because there are chicken burgers, as well as lamb and venison. And do bring the kids because there are junior burgers, as well as milkshakes (along with fresh juices and beer/wine).
But the main attraction are the beefburgers, made from 100% Aberdeen Angus Scotch beef, which get piled up with cheese, or chilli, or bacon, as well as mango sauce, pesto, satay sauce, blue cheese, mozzarella. And they come on sour dough buns. And there are perfect, square-cut fried (chips, to you) that are greaseless, crisp outside and slightly floury inside. The owners plan to open another GBK in north London very soon, so all those poor North Londoners don’t have to be jealous of those lucky enough to be living south of the river.
