Indian Seasoning

Salil Bhatia is one of those restaurateurs whose background in some of India’s finest hotels and subsequently, a directorship in London’s famed Gaylord, have put him in very good stead. So much so that he’s been confident enough to have launched Indian Seasoning – originally opened by him two years ago under a different name.

Taking a staunchly north Indian approach to the menu, the emphasis is on authenticity though there is flair with the odd touch of innovation and also a peppering of Indo-Chinese items. The former comes through vividly as the melting and appropriately nutty tasting walnut kebab whilst the latter is triumphantly on show in the utterly delicious ‘drums of heaven’ – plump and juicy chicken drumsticks prepared in a medium-spiced Oriental sauce.

Of the mains, the chicken kalimirch is a notable entry, embellished with chunks of boneless chicken in a flavoursome sauce of black pepper and aromatic spices. The lamb shank and the duck Chettinad are the other meat orientated dishes making their mark.

Sides don’t exactly steal the show, but certainly hold their own: amongst these, the baingan bharta (aubergine) and the pindi channa (chick peas) along with the lemon and ginger rice, are a standout.

Amid the desserts, we find the the rarely seen firni pudding

The décor here is understated – wooden flooring, white tablecloths, clear Perspex dining chairs and even a purpose built “wall of bottled wines. All in all, a very fine neighborhood restaurant that could even be a “destination” one.
