3 Monkeys
136 Herne Hill SE24 7738 5500
Looking at the luminous monkeys dancing in the tympanum of this former bank, you would never guess that an Indian restaurant lies on the other side of the door, over a bridge looking down on the bar. Iinteresting off-centre angles predominate and a display kitchen at the back shows off the tandoor and tawa stations. Tabletops are pristine white with napkins tied up in purple ribbon. Look for starters such as crab malabari, or mains like spicy prawns peri-peri, Goan fish curry and excellent lamb. Vegetarians should ask for the off-menu special, market vegetable poryal, flavoured with coconut milk, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Some recent reports have said that food and service do not always meet up to the high standards of design, but a new chef and manager are in place and things should settle down.
